With the impending closure of this Vegas icon on July 17th 2024, we wanted to pay our respects and do our part to preserve the history of this beloved strip hotel. In today’s very special edition of James and Paul Try it All, Paul takes the time to enjoy the once groundbreaking Mirage Volcano Show, after taking one final stroll through this soon to be demolished property to reminisce on the golden days of The Mirage Hotel and Casino. Over the last 35 years, The Mirage has hosted fabulous attractions and exciting shows drawing in tourists from all over the world. Ask any seasoned Las Vegas visitor and they’ll tell you just how it felt to visit the enchanting Secret Garden and Dolphin Habitat, see the famous illusionists Siegfried and Roy perform with their illustrious White Tigers, or even experience the more recent and unforgettable Beatles Love by Cirque du Soleil. Joining Paul will be an esteemed friend of the channel, Mr. JK Grence (Fellow Vegas Enthusiast and Former Cocktail Critic for The Phoenix New Times). Paul and JK share fun facts and memories before this historical Las Vegas resort vanishes just like its namesake. During this walkthrough, Paul will visit The Mirage Atrium, The Hotel Lobby Aquarium, and the iconic and instagramable Beatles Love Theater, all before ending the night with a front row view of the historic Mirage Volcano show for one of its final eruptions. Feldman spoof film of CASINO ROYALE is among the great film scores, but just as legendary is its reputation among audiophiles as one of the finest sounding recordings of all time. Sadly due to master tape damage the best release is still the renowned 1967 original USA Colgems Stereo and Mono vinyl pressings. In spite of that label's known issues with vinyl quality if you are patient and have a bit to spend, one of the finest sounding vinyl records ever made can be yours. It is without question one of the finest sounding records I've ever heard and is among the best if not the absolute best sounding record in my collection. I discuss the score, the recording process which involved using a newer tape formulation, the incredible dynamic range and fidelity in the recording, the Colgems Stereo and Mono LPs, how to look for a good copy and which stamper and pressing plant deadwax information to seek out for the absolute best in sound quality. This is a record that belongs in EVERY record collection. Even if you don't like the film or aren't into soundtracks. If you have a turntable you need a copy of Bacharach's score. It is a record you can use to demo and fine tune systems. It is reference grade which means you will have to pay a collector's price premium on copies from sellers who know the album's reputation. I also discuss some of the various audiophile reissue over the years and what I feel is the best available edition which is amazingly still in print: The 50th Anniversary CD from Quartet Records. This CD is my most recommended soundtrack release, gets very close to a Colgems original pressing in sound quality and includes almost all of the mono film cues.
